October 27th: Confirmation Sunday

First Lutheran Church

Our mission is to know Jesus and to make Jesus known. -John 17

WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS

HYMN: "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" Red 504

CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS
Lord, we confess our lack of faith.  We see a glimpse of what we ought to be and we know we fall short of the goal.  We desire faith that is solid and unchanging, yet we crumble under trials and temptations.  We want to be strong, but we know our own weakness.  Our sinful condition strips us of any spiritual gain that we humanly devise. Lord, forgive us.  Accept us as we are, unworthy for the task, yet gifted for your purposes.  Give us your gift of faith. Amen.
Our God is a great God and knows our needs for all areas of our life. God knows our weakness and our unbelieving hearts, yet loves us enough to die on a cross and provide forgiveness of our sin.  Now the focus is not on the faith that we can muster, but on the great gifts that our Lord gives daily as we live in trust.  God has given us the gift of faith, faith for the moment, faith for every trial, faith for every temptation, faith for every difficult situation.  Praise God for this inexpressible gift of faith.

PRAYER
This day brings joy into our hearts and home, dear Lord. We thank you for the covenant you made with us in Holy Baptism.  You have brought us through the study of your Word to know the meaning of our baptism, to stand before the world and confess your name as the only true God, in whom we have life eternal.  You have blessed us with a Christian home.  For all of this we thank you.  We are grateful also for our church, our congregation, our pastors and the teachers who have helped us in learning Your Word.  We are thankful likewise for the sponsors who have assisted us in our responsibility.  Equip us all our days for the demands of Christian witness.  Renew us each day, in our baptismal grace, so that we honor your holy name and praise it forever.  Amen.

Matthew 1:18-21

HYMN: "Silent Night" Red 281

SERMON: Wyatt Christian

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
Galatians 2:20

OFFERING
Be strong in the Lord, & be of good courage; Your defender is he who is always the same. Mount up with wings, as the eagle ascending; Vict'ry is sure when you call on His name.
Be strong, be strong, be strong in the Lord; And be of good courage, for He is your Guide.
Be strong, be strong, be strong in the Lord; And rejoice for the vict'ry is yours.
Put on the armor the Lord has provided; place your defense in His unfailing care.
Trust Him, for He will be with you in battle, Lighting your path to avoid ev'ry snare. (refrain)
Be strong in the Lord, and be of good courage: Your mighty Commander will vanquish the foe.

Fear not the battle, for the vict'ry is always His; He will protect you wherever you go. (refrain)

RITE OF CONFIRMATION, PRESENTATION

CONFESSION OF FAITH: APOSTLE'S CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,  who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,  born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to hell (to the dead). On the third day he rose again;  he ascended into heaven,  he is seated at the right hand of the Father,  and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,  the communion of saints,  the forgiveness of sins,  the resurrection of the body,  and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS, LAYING ON OF HANDS

HYMNS: "Spirit of Gentleness" Red 396, "Go My Children With My Blessing" Red 543, Music

PRAYER
Almighty God, heavenly Father, confirm the work you have begun in these young people.  Grant that they may remain in the fellowship of your church and in the faith of your gospel.  Keep them so that nothing of this world may lead them away from you and the truth they have confessed.  Give them joy in obeying your Word.  Grant that they may always know you more intimately, love you more fervently and serve you more faithfully in word and deed….for the welfare of all humanity, for the up building of your people and the glory of your name, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

LORD'S PRAYER Sung
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed by thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.
