Jesus said, "Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions."
1 How deep the Father's love for us How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure
How great the pain of searing loss The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One Bring many sons to glory
2 Behold the man upon a cross My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice Call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished
3 I will not boast in anything No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ His death and resurrection
Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom
CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS, KYRIE
1. Praise and thanksgiving, God, we would offer, for all things living,
you have made good: harvest of sown fields, fruits of the orchard,
hay from the mown fields, blossom and wood.
2. God, bless the labor we bring to serve you, that with our neighbor
we may be fed. Sowing or tilling, we would work with you,
harvesting, milling for daily bread.
3. Father, providing food for your children, by Wisdom's guiding
teach us to share one with another, so that, rejoicing with us,
all others may know your care.
4. Then will your blessing reach ev'ry people, freely confessing your gracious hand. Where you are reigning, no one will hunger; your love sustaining showers the land.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14; 2:18-23 The teacher of wisdom who wrote Ecclesiastes sees that working for mere accumulation of wealth turns life into an empty game. Vanity of vanities, says the Teacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. I, the Teacher, when king over Israel in Jerusalem, applied my mind to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven; it is an unhappy business that God has given to human beings to be busy with. I saw all the deeds that are done under the sun; and see, all is vanity and a chasing after wind. I hated all my toil in which I had toiled under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to those who come after me-- and who knows whether they will be wise or foolish? Yet they will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity. So I turned and gave my heart up to despair concerning all the toil of my labors under the sun, because sometimes one who has
Colossians 3:1-11 Life in Christ includes a radical reorientation of our values. Just as the newly baptized shed their old clothes in order to put on new garments, so Christians are called to let go of greed and take hold of a life shaped by God's love in Christ. So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient. These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living that life. But now you must get rid of all such things--anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. 11In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in
Luke 12:13-21 The gospel of Luke tells not only how Jesus brought good news to the poor, but also how he sought to save those who were rich. Here he warns against identifying the worth of one's life with the value of one's possessions. Someone in the crowd said to [Jesus,] "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me." But he said to him, "Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?" And he said to them, "Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions." Then he told them a parable: "The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself, 'What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?' Then he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God."
SERMON
1. We give thee but thine own, whate'er the gift may be;
all that we have is thine alone, a trust, O Lord, from thee.
2. May we thy bounties thus, as stewards true receive,
and gladly, as thou blessest us, to thee our first fruits give.
3. The captive to release, to God the lost to bring,
to teach the way of life and peace, it is a Christlike thing,
5. And we believe thy word, though dim our faith may be:
whate'er for thine we do, O Lord, we do it unto thee.
OFFERING, PRAYERS, LORD’S PRAYER
BLESSING: Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. May you be rooted
and grounded in his love. Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
bless you now and forever. Amen.
SING: JOHNNY APPLESEED
Go in peace. Welcome the stranger. Thanks be to God.
