SHINE IN US, HYMN: Lost in the Night…………………..Red 243

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

DUET: “In the Bleak Midwinter”                                  Beth & Julie

HYMN: Lift Up Your Heads

LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLES “Let there be light!” God’s Word proclaims the coming of the Lord. “The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear?  The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid? When the (enemies of darkness gather around me)  My heart shall not fear” Psalm 27  Blessed are those who have learned to praise you, who walk in the light of your presence.  Psalm 89 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.  Psalm 119 We light the candle of joy. Preparing ourselves for Christ’s coming. Enlighten us with your grace. Prepare our hearts to welcome him with joy. Grant this through Christ our Lord, whose coming is certain and whose day draws near. Amen Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light… Put your trust in the light… so that you may become children of light." John 12: 35

Hymn: Kyrie……………………………………………………Red 157

Beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace, mercy, and peace be with you all. And also with you.

Hymn: Let My Prayer………………………………………….Red 232

PRAYER: Almighty God, you once called John the Baptist to give witness to the coming of your Son and to prepare his way. Grant us, your people, the wisdom to see your purpose today and the openness to hear your will, that we may witness to Christ's coming and so prepare his way; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

Hymn: Joyous Light……………………………………………Red 561

1 Peter 2:9   You are a chosen people, royal priests, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession. You were chosen to tell about the wonderful acts of God, who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. At one time you were not a people, but now you are God's people. In the past you had never received mercy, but now you have received God's mercy. Dear friends, you are like foreigners and strangers in this world. I beg you to avoid the evil things your bodies want to do that fight against your soul. People who do not believe are living all around you… Live such good lives that they will see the good things you do and will give glory to God on the day when Christ comes again.

2 Corinthians 4: 4-9 The god who rules this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers. They cannot see the light, which is the good news about our glorious Christ, who shows what God is like. We are not preaching about ourselves. Our message is that Jesus Christ is Lord. He also sent us to be your servants. The Scriptures say, "God commanded light to shine in the dark." Now God is shining in our hearts to let you know that his glory is seen in Jesus Christ. We are like clay jars in which this treasure is stored. The real power comes from God and not from us. We often suffer, but we are never crushed. Even when we don't know what to do, we never give up. In times of trouble, God is with us, and when we are knocked down, we get up again.

HYMN: Prepare the Royal……………………………………...Red 264

GOSPEL READING: John 9: 1  As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" "Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."  Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man's eyes. "Go," he told him, "wash in the Pool of Siloam" (this word means Sent). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.
